Once in the stomach, the IGB is filled with a sterile saline solution and a dye so that it can float freely and safely. The dye serves as a marker in case the IGB is ruptured. If so, the dye will be discharged through urination and the patient should contact the treating physician for its immediate removal.
An IGB treatment allows patients to follow a very strict diet while the IGB is inside their stomach.
As an IGB occupies 60% of a patient's stomach capacity, it creates a sensation of permanent fullness with limited amounts of food. The Total Control team of medical, psychological, and nutritional support helps patients in their transition to healthier eating habits. The IGB treatment is temporary. Should a patient still require to lose more weight, a second IGB may be used.
IGB treatment is recommended for overweight or obese patients who have not been able to significantly lose weight over time through diets, exercise, and medical treatment alone. It is also used by patients with an overweight of more than 66 lbs. and not willing to undergo a bariatric surgery such as a gastric bypass.
